This is a clinic to become a New Grade 8 referee. While there is no age limit set by USSF to become a referee, Virginia Child Labor Law requires refs be at least 12 years of age. Our recommendation for a New-8 course is at least 14 years of age. A better option for young refs is the Grade 9 course. See our section on Becoming a Referee.
STATUS: FULL
Please note that we will not go beyond the limits of the classroom. The fire marshal may not like that.
ter as a ref for 2009, pay (please pay online and earn those airmiles) and then enroll in this clinic.
MATERIALS FOR THE CLASS
You will need to bring:
Pencil or pen, perhaps a highlighter
Notepad
We will be supplying you with the following documents:
The Laws of the Game
Guide to Procedures
Referee Administrative Handbook
For those who would like to prepare ahead check out the USSF Online Videos on the Laws of the Game.
You should not bring:
Using cell phones and text messaging in class is not permitted. We will have breaks at approximately every 90 minutes where one can leave to check messages. If you cannot go 90 minutes without checking messages you should rethink your desire to become a referee.
BREAKS
Despite what is normally an overwhelming presence of young people in class, the instructors tend to treat this as adult education. While we generally will have a break halfway through the morning and halfway through the afternoon sessions, it is expected that one if must leave they will do so quietly. No hall pass is necessary. All day sessions will have a lunch break as well.
DRESS
Dress for this referee clinic is casual.
We will need your cooperation by being on time to class and being quiet during instructional time.
