SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (October 22, 2010) -- Stephanie Ellis has been selected as the 2010 VYSA Young Female Referee of the Year. She was the Prince William Soccer Referees Association Young Ref of the Year for 2009.
While living in Manassas, Stephanie became a Grade 8 referee at the age of 13. At the age of 15 Stephanie was nominated for and attended PRIDE Academy at the University of Richmond in July 2008. She followed a traditional route of officiating recreational matches then being challenged with competitive assignments including being selected to referee State Cup matches.
Stephanie moved from northern Virginia to Virginia Beach in September 2009. There she used officiating to help her acclimate to a new community. She immediately went to work officiating for the Tidewater Soccer Referee Association. Her assignments have also included State Cup preliminary matches, the Over-Thirty Soccer League, Southside Men’s League, Metro DC-Virginia Soccer Association Neptune Soccer Classic Tournament, and Southeast Virginia Women’s Soccer Association. In the spring of 2010 she was selected to referee in the State Cup Championships in Richmond, VA. She was selected to attend the ODP Region I Camp at the University of Rhode Island in July 2010. And this fall, she has been selected to officiate the VYSA 2010 State Cup tournament.
At PWSRA, Stephanie was one of the Youth Mentors often giving advice and tips to the younger referees. She has helped her sister and other friends get involved with refereeing as well.
Most recently, Stephanie was selected to work the WAGS Tournament as a referee site coordinator. She was selected based on her maturity as a person, her knowledge of the Laws of the Game, and her calmness in dealing with upset people who occasionally frequent the referee area at tournaments.
Stephanie is a senior at Princess Anne H.S. in Virginia Beach where she is pursuing the full International Baccalaureate Diploma and maintains a 3.9 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Model United Nations, Scholastic Bowl, and co-founder of the Mural Club. She also leads groups on Eco-tours of the fragile Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Atlantic Ocean promoting its conservation and sharing her love of the outdoors.
Stephanie joins Stephanie Myrick (2009) and Ryan White (2008 and 2007) as having been selected as the VYSA Young Referee of the Year, marking the fourth consecutive year that PWSRA has produced a state winner.
